The 2012 Open

The 2012 Open

Many of you know and participated in the 2012 CrossFit games open. 5 weeks of work and hell and mental taxation. Thank the Lord it's over. After all the chalk dust settled, I landed in 27th place. Top 60 make regionals and out of a pool of about 2600, I'm good with my placement.

I trained hard from November until now and I'm definitely a better all-around crossfitter. A smarter one as well. Knowing when to end a wod and when to not go for a heavier lift. We had Miguel "The Professor" Garza programming wods for us.

All of this definitely made me better, but it was all a second place tie behind the one thing that made me better this year, my training partner and friend, Mark Manning.

Ok wait a minute ladies.....Adrien, Victoria, and Aggie, you have all helped me so much as well, but let's face it, the bromance just isn't there with you 3.

A big shout out and thanks to Mark for working his ass off to be where he is today and for being the athlete he is. A huge slice of my success pie is served up to him. Couldn't have done it without you Big Cat....4 more weeks! Keep pushing....

Moment of Clarity

The last 3 years of my life has been CrossFit related. That's 156 weeks, roughly 1100 days and about 800 wods. Not to mention about 15-20 competitions with multiple wods each day.

Is this the definition of consistency or crazy?

It depends on what your goals are. My goal, after a few months of CrossFit, was to be the best CrossFit athlete I could be.

With the 2012 Open a few days away from wrapping up, a lot of people have been comparing themselves to the athletes at the top of the world and each region. What the worldwide and regional leader board doesn't show or say is how much these athletes give up to obtain these scores. I'm not saying I'm one of the top athletes in the world but I do know that I have given up and sacrificed a lot for my goal and passion. Sacrifices that include a ton of social events which means a lot less time with friends and family. A lot less sleep and hobbies outside of CrossFit. Over the last 3 years, I have scheduled trips and vacations around the CrossFit games season. If the destination had an adequate facility to workout. I literally feel like I have been eating the same crap for 3 years. That's about 6500 meals. I've definitely had my cheat meals too.

Worth it? That's for you to decide. If you have no desire to be a games athlete then hell no it isn't. For me, it is. I set out to be the best CrossFit athlete I could be. I wanted to compete against the best and I have. Each year the competition gets stiffer and stiffer. Last year there were about 900 men in the south central region. This year there are close to 2600. The pool gets larger and larger every year. I'm happy to be among the top 60 with 1 wod left and hope to advance to 2012 South Central Regional in San Antonio a the end of April.

So, again, consistent or crazy? In my opinion straight up consistent.

What will you sacrifice?

There are plenty of times when I have a goal and I tell myself I would do anything to achieve it. But when it comes down to it, would I really? I mean, let's be honest what would I sacrifice for success. Sleep? Food? Social life? If I want something bad enough I will.

All Day, Every Day and I could not be more thankful :-)

Almost 2 years ago I began training someone who had a ton of drive and determination. Little did I know how much she would impact my life and how much I would grow to appreciate the work she does and more importantly, the person she is.

Aggie came to CFRR as a client but has morphed into so much more. In fact, she is one of the main faces of CrossFit Round Rock. She has quite possibly the toughest job at the gym. Not only does she coach a ton of classes at CFRR, she also works the office and preps the rosters each month for the classes. This is def a task that she has taken on and is huge to the success of the gym. I frequently go to her for answers and by frequently I mean multiple times a day.

I can safely say that the gym would not run the same way without the gigantic role she plays. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication. BTW, she's back to working out again so watch out!!!
