Getting frustrated with movements and exercises is very common with CrossFit. In fact, it's a certainty. There will always be movements that come up which challenge us and make life tougher.
The truth is, the movements that frustrate us are the movements that, in the end, put us over the top when we do excel at them!
Example 1:
I'm personally really good at deadlifts and muscle ups. In fact, the perfect wod for me is some combination of these two. So, when these movements do present themselves in workouts or competitions, I already know I'm going to excel at that workout. And then, when I do, it's really not that big of a deal because I expected that result.
Example 2:
I'm horrible at thrusters and pistols aren't exactly my favorite exercise either. So what happens? When they come up in workouts or training, I slow down and think about the movement. What I need my body to do in order to be the most efficient I can possibly be at the movements I struggle with the most. And I definitely don't shy away from them during training! I have to face these in order to overcome them. And then, when I do, it's so much more rewarding than excelling at something that I don't have to work as hard at.
How do we get better at weaknesses?
-slow down (and/or)
-take off the weight
How can we focus on form and technique when it's too heavy to control or we are moving too fast to get the technique right? It won't happen. It's also, the best recipe for injury.
It takes a bigger person to slow down and take the weight off then to push through and get injured.
We all have movements that just naturally come easier for us. We all have movements that challenge us. And then there are those athletes that just seem to be badass at everything.
Guess what, it only seems like that because they have put in countless hours training their weaknesses. They weren't born good at everything. And it pisses me off when people say that because it completely negates all the hard work that someone has put in to get to that point.
At the end of the day, training our weaknesses is what makes us excel. Period. If you suck at something, do more of it. Train smart.
